Gateway Healthcare, RI’s largest nonprofit behavioral healthcare provider, is hiring a Peer Specialist to work with adults managing mental health issues, including substance abuse & co-occurring disorders!  This is a community-based position that will requires travel within Rhode Island.

Responsibilities: 

  • Provide direct mental health services to clients in an emergency crisis, outpatient, community support program, and residential settings, designed to assist clients in regaining personal control over their lives & over their own recovery processes, serving as a role model to clients
  • Engage clients who may be at risk & provide stage appropriate recovery education & supports
  • Educate clients about effective coping strategies, self-help techniques & the self-help group process, sometimes based on personal experience
  • Educate & engage individuals in the Wellness Recovery Action Plan process as a means to recognize early triggers & signs of relapse
  • Assist clients in clarifying their goals for rehabilitation & recovery as well as their personal interests, goals, abilities, strengths & assets
  • Help clients develop support systems, increased hope, a sense of wellness, & self-esteem
  • Promote the knowledge of available service options & choices, as well as the utilization of natural resources within the community
  • Assist in the orientation process for persons who are new to receiving mental health and/or co-occurring disorders services
  • Facilitate Double Trouble, 12 Step, or other self-help groups to nurture a peer support culture
  • Support clients in seeking to connect/reconnect with family, friends, and significant others
  • Provide 22 hours of face-to-face contact with clients per week

Requirements:

  • Be self-identified as a current or former user of mental health, substance abuse, or co-occurring services, who can relate to others who are not using those services
  • Completed & passed a Peer Specialist certification program
  • Ability to obtain a Statewide Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) certification within 6-12 months of employment
  • High school diploma or GED

Shift & Schedule:  1st Shift, M-F 8:00am-4:30pm

Location:  Openings available in Pawtucket, Johnston, and Charlestown, RI
