Gateway Healthcare, RI’s largest nonprofit behavioral healthcare provider, is hiring a Peer Specialist to provide peer support & care coordination services to Veterans & military personnel who have behavioral health needs. Peer Specialists serve as a role model, mentor, advocate, and motivator to clients, sharing their personal experiences to help motivate to seek treatment, prevent relapse, and promote long-term recovery. This is a community-based position that will requires travel within Rhode Island.

Responsibilities:
- Conduct community outreach to engage Veterans in social & recreational activities to form meaningful & trusting relationships that can lead to identifying the need for behavioral health services
- Provide opportunities for individuals receiving services to direct their own recovery process
- Coach & support the acquisition & use of skills needed to facilitate individual recovery
- Assist Veterans in identifying their personal strengths, abilities, & needs and articulate personal recovery goals & advocate for them during treatment
- Promote the identification & use of natural resources & support systems within the community, accompanying clients to assist in accessing services
- Facilitate the development of a sense of wellness, self-worth, and personal control over one’s life & recovery journey
- Act as a role model to Veterans in recovery to inspire hope by sharing life experiences & lessons learned as a person with lived experience
- Model/mentor recovery process & demonstrate coping skills
- Assist in the orientation process for clients who are new to receiving mental health and/or co-occurring treatment
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity to the military experience & have competence in trauma informed care
- Support clients in seeking to connect/reconnect with family, friends & significant others and in learning how to improve or eliminate unhealthy relationships
- As requested by client, foster spiritual connections with faith-based organizations, and/or participation in self-help and mutual support groups
Requirements:
- Veteran who has spent a minimum of 2 years in personal recovery from a mental health and/or substance use condition
- Ability to complete certification as a Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) – We will assist with this process!
- Be self-identified current or former user of mental health or co-occurring services who can relate to others who have not utilized those services
- Valid driver’s license and use of car during normal working hours, or other means of transportation to complete major functions of job
- High school diploma or GED
Shift & Schedule: 1st Shift, M-F 8:00am-4:30pm
