About Us

The mission of the Substance Use and Mental Health Leadership Council of RI (SUMHLC) is to promote a collaborative, coordinated system of high quality, comprehensive community-based mental health and substance use prevention and treatment services.

Position Overview

SUMHLC is seeking an experienced Per Diem Grant Writer to support our organization by researching, writing to apply for grant proposals for government and foundation funding. The ideal candidate has demonstrated success in securing behavioral health-related grants, and is comfortable working independently in a fast-paced nonprofit environment.

This is a flexible, part-time, contract-based position with assignments based on funding cycles and organizational needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Write compelling grant proposals, LOIs, and grant reports tailored to mental health and substance use prevention programming.
  • Collaborate with program staff to gather project details, budgets, outcome data, and evaluation plans.
  • Research funding opportunities aligned with the organization’s mission and programs.
  • Prepare supporting documents such as logic models, timelines, and budgets.
  • Ensure grant submissions are compliant with all funder guidelines and deadlines.
  • Maintain organized records of proposals submitted and outcomes.
  • Provide insights on improving grant strategy and increasing funding success.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Social Work, Psychology, English, or related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience writing successful grants for mental health, substance use, or prevention-focused nonprofits.
  • Familiarity with federal and state behavioral health funding (e.g., SAMHSA, CDC, state health departments).
  • Excellent writing, editing, and research skills; able to synthesize complex ideas into clear, persuasive narratives.
  • Understanding of evidence-based models in prevention and behavioral health (e.g., SBIRT, harm reduction, trauma-informed care).
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and online grant portals (e.g., Grants.gov, SAM.gov).
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with nonprofits serving underserved or high-risk communities.
  • Track record of securing grants over $50,000.
  • Familiarity with outcomes measurement, program evaluation, and grant budgeting.
